Why Burel Wool?

Born in the mountains of Serra da Estrela in Portugal, burel is a dense, felted wool fabric shaped by generations of knowledge. For centuries, it protected shepherds from wind, cold, and rain. It is honest. It is reliable. It is made to endure.

What makes burel unique is not only its origin, but its performance. The wool is carded, spun, woven, then compacted through a finishing process that makes the fabric exceptionally dense and resistant.

This natural structure gives burel its durability — able to withstand years of use without losing its character. At the same time, it remains breathable and naturally water-repellent. Not coated, not treated artificially, but protected by the very nature of wool itself. It resists moisture, wind, and wear — just as it always has in the mountains.

Why Burel Factory?

The Burel Factory in Manteigas is where this heritage found its second life. When the last wool factory in Serra da Estrela faced insolvency, a decision was made to save it — not just the building, but everything it held: the 19th-century machines, the master weavers, and the knowledge that existed nowhere else. Tradition and innovation met — carefully and respectfully.

Old weaving patterns were reinterpreted. Colour was introduced to the fabric that, until then, had only ever existed in the tones of the wool itself.

Burel Factory works at the rhythm of the mountain — slowly, deliberately, without shortcuts. Their wool comes from local shepherds who graze native breeds on the high plateaus of the Serra da Estrela. The animals are sheared by hand, without distress. Nothing is wasted: burel offcuts are collected, reintroduced into the process, and transformed into new pieces. A zero-waste policy that predates the term itself, now certified under the Recycled Claim Standard. The production stays small, stays in-house, stays honest.
